AboutThe City Marina Del Ray
Marina del Rey is the Westside’s waterfront address built around the harbor itself. Boats, docks, promenades, and marina views shape the landscape, giving the community a distinct coastal character. The harbor was dedicated in 1965 and remains the largest constructed small-craft harbor in North America.
As the top-volume brokerage in Los Angeles County and the firm behind the highest average sale price of any top-20 residential brokerage in the region, Westside Estate Agency knows that no two Marina del Rey properties should be approached the same way. A harbor view, building pedigree, ownership structure, and even a property’s exact location can change the equation. We pay attention to those distinctions because they shape how a residence is valued, positioned, and ultimately understood.

Often assumed to be part of Marina del Rey because of its name, the Marina Peninsula is technically its own Venice neighborhood, annexed to Los Angeles in 1925 and lying just west of the harbor along the Silver Strand. Its streets carry an unusual, distinctly nautical naming convention, running alphabetically from Anchorage Street to Yawl Street, and the peninsula’s roughly 3,000 residents enjoy direct beach access alongside proximity to the harbor itself.

A Harbor BuiltFrom a Dream Marina Del Ray
Marina del Rey’s story spans nearly eighty years before its official opening. As far back as 1887, a developer backed by the Santa Fe Railroad attempted to turn the Playa del Rey estuary into a major commercial harbor — and went bankrupt trying. The land sat largely undeveloped, a favorite of duck hunters and birdwatchers, until President Eisenhower signed federal legislation in 1954 authorizing the project in partnership with Los Angeles County. Construction of the harbor’s breakwater began in 1963, using rock quarried from Catalina Island, and Marina del Rey officially opened on April 10, 1965 — a roughly $36 million project that made it, at the time, the largest small-craft harbor of its kind anywhere in the world.
The following decades brought the community its enduring landmarks. Fisherman’s Village, built in 1969 in the style of a New England fishing village, remains one of the harbor’s most recognizable destinations, with its lighthouse, waterfront promenade, and boat rentals. Today, the harbor’s 21 marinas hold roughly 5,300 pleasure boats, yachts, and commercial vessels — including clubs like the California Yacht Club, which relocated to Marina del Rey in 1963 and celebrated its centennial in 2022, and the Del Rey Yacht Club, both fixtures of the marina’s boating culture since its earliest years.
Neighboring Communitiesand Silicon Beach Marina Del Ray
Marina del Rey sits at the center of a cluster of neighborhoods that have, over the past two decades, become one of the country’s most significant technology hubs.
Just north of the harbor, the Ballona Wetlands preserve roughly 600 acres of what remains of a historic 2,000-acre wetland — the rest absorbed into Marina del Rey’s own development in the 1960s. Today the reserve, along with the Ballona Creek bike path, offers a quiet counterpoint to the marina’s density, with guided walks and birdwatching for those who know to look. Just south, Playa del Rey traces back to a 1902 beachfront development, complete with its own short-lived motor racetrack in 1910, and later drew Hollywood figures like Cecil B. DeMille to build custom beach homes along its bluffs.
Inland, Playa Vista — built largely on land once belonging to Howard Hughes’s aircraft company, where the Spruce Goose itself was constructed — has become a central node of Silicon Beach, the informal name for the Westside’s technology corridor stretching from Santa Monica to the South Bay. More than 500 tech companies now call the broader area home, and Loyola Marymount University, which relocated near Playa del Rey decades earlier, has embraced the moniker directly, branding itself “The University of Silicon Beach” and expanding its film and television graduate programs to a dedicated Playa Vista campus.
The Marina del ReyLifestyle Marina Del Ray
The harbor is the center of daily life. Sailing, paddleboarding, kayaking, and cycling are part of the local routine, while Burton W. Chace Park extends into the main channel with lawns, harbor views, events, and guest docks. Marina “Mother’s” Beach provides a calm-water setting for swimming and paddling.
Dining also follows the waterline. Dear Jane’s serves seafood on Panay Way, SALT Restaurant & Bar overlooks the marina from the Marina del Rey Hotel, and Cast & Plow brings waterfront dining to The Ritz-Carlton. Fisherman’s Village adds its own mix of harborside restaurants and live music, and the community’s annual Holiday Boat Parade remains one of its longest-running traditions. Venice, Playa Vista, Culver City, and LAX are within convenient reach, keeping the marina connected to the wider Westside.
