West LA’s history centers on Sawtelle, a community that began around a veterans’ home established in 1888 on land donated by early Los Angeles landowner Arcadia Bandini de Stearns Baker — now the sprawling West Los Angeles VA Medical Center. Entrepreneurs subdivided nearby land in the 1890s to house hospital workers and veterans’ families, and the small city of Sawtelle was annexed into Los Angeles in 1922.

By the 1920s, Sawtelle had become one of the region’s most significant Japanese American communities, drawing gardeners and landscapers who tended the homes of nearby Beverly Hills, Westwood, and Bel Air — areas that, at the time, restricted Japanese American residency.
