A Neighborhood BuiltAround a University Westwood
Westwood’s modern history began with a single land deal. In 1919, department store founder Arthur Letts purchased the roughly 3,000-acre Wolfskill Ranch, envisioning a master-planned community — but died in 1923 before it could be realized. His son-in-law, Harold Janss, and Harold’s brother Edwin carried the plan forward through the Janss Investment Company, selling 373 acres to the Regents of the University of California at a fraction of its value, with local municipalities covering the cost through bond measures. Ground broke on the new campus in 1927, and the University of California, Los Angeles opened for classes in September 1929.
That same year, the Janss brothers opened Westwood Village immediately south of campus — a 55-acre, Mediterranean-themed shopping district designed to serve the university, and only the second planned commercial district of its kind built anywhere in the country. Architects were instructed to follow a unified Spanish and Mediterranean theme, with clay tile roofs and towered buildings meant to serve as beacons for drivers along Wilshire Boulevard; the Janss Investment Company Building, known as the Janss Dome, still stands today as a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument. The same family simultaneously developed the surrounding hills into what became Westwood Hills and Holmby Hills.

The stretch of Wilshire Boulevard between Westwood Village and the Los Angeles Country Club is lined with luxury condominium towers. Together with Bel Air and Beverly Hills, Holmby Hills forms the celebrated “Platinum Triangle” of Los Angeles. Developed by the same Janss family that built Westwood Village, it remains one of the city’s most private and expansive estate neighborhoods — long associated with the Playboy Mansion, longtime home of the late Hugh Hefner, one of the era’s most recognizable private estates.

Also known as Holmby Westwood, this historic residential district sits between UCLA and the Los Angeles Country Club. Curving streets and substantial lots frame homes in Spanish Colonial Revival, Mediterranean Revival, Colonial Revival, and other period styles, with work by architects including Paul R. Williams and Wallace Neff.
